The Fortress of Salses

  • Salses-le-Château

Located in an exceptional natural setting, between the ponds of Salses and the Corbières, the Fortress offers visitors remarkable views and a unique atmosphere all year round.

From April 1th to September 30th : from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM continuously.
From October 1th to March 31th : from 10:00 AM to 12:45 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM.

Last access 45 minutes before closing.

Closed on January 1th, May 1th, November 1th and 11th and December 25th.

The Font Estramar or Fountain of Salses

  • Salses-le-Château

Located at the foot of the maritime Corbières on the territory of the municipality of Salses-le-Château, in the Pyrénées-Orientales. It is one of the two outflows feeding the pond of Leucate. La Font Estramar is the deepest resurgence explored by human diving in the world.

Swimming is prohibited there, but this place remains to be contemplated, you can take great photos there.

Salses lagoon complex

This small haven of nature and biodiversity is located between the pond of Salses-Leucate and the town of Saint-Hippolyte. This site is classified Natura 2000 and ZPS (special protection zone) because of the 280 species of birds including around thirty protected species.

This walk allows you to enjoy an exceptional natural and wild environment. Also discover various sites including the Bonança site where traditional fishing huts and Catalan boats that enthusiasts restore.

Leucate

Its beaches on the village side :
Long sandy beach on the shores of the Mediterranean, suitable for families and sheltered by the famous Cliffs of Leucate.

The pond of Leucate (or pond of Salses and Leucate) is one of the lagoons of the Languedoc coast. It is divided between the departments of Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude.

The Marina of Port-Leucate
Located in the heart of the Lion weather zone, the marina is one of the largest in Europe in the Mediterranean. A refuge and an exceptional stopover within a wild and generous nature, preserved, in exceptional landscapes. Its fauna and flora make Cap Leucate a remarkable site in the heart of the Lion. It is also a migratory stage for all bird species.

The shellfish port of Oyster Center
Oyster farmers raise their shellfish: oysters, mussels, clams and even imperial prawns on the banks of the Grau, in the oyster farming centre. Since 2017, some of these producers have won gold medals awarded each year during the presentation of Leucate oysters at the Salon de l’Agriculture. A real change of scenery to taste a few oysters.

A must-see at any time of the day, the thrilling view of the sea transports us all on a magical journey in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.

Island of Correggio
Or bird island extends over 150 hectares, which via two bridges connects Leucate Village to Port-Leucate. It was created artificially during the development of Port-Leucate, Port-Barcarès and the digging of the port and its communication channel with the pond.
It is part of the natural area of ​​ecological, faunal and floristic interest of Correggio.

Fitou

In order to appreciate all the richness and the beauty of its landscapes, the pedestrian excursions will allow you to carry out unforgettable walks and to discover the architecture of dry stones made up of walls of separation (enclosure) and of capitelles which work the cutting of the scrubland. You will be bewitched by the fragrant perfumes of this typical environment of the Corbières Maritimes.

Fitou Castle
Covering approximately 1,000 m2, the castle is located on a site overlooking the village of Fitou, the ponds of Leucate and the sea.

La Franqui

La Franqui was the first seaside resort in Aude: a fine sandy beach, the cliffs in sight, transparent waters and room for everyone!

It has everything to please: 3.5 km of beach just for you between cliffs, the Mediterranean Sea and a pond! Unmissable small preserved village with a magnificent walk on the sand as far as the eye can see and in the shade of century-old pines.

Ideal for water sports, the Mondial du Vent takes place there every year.

Cucugnan

It is by its mill at the top of the Hill that the visit of the village begins. Tables set up at the foot of the mill will allow you to taste bakery specialties and the famous crunchy dishes with Mediterranean flavors.

Then, at more than 700 meters above sea level, on the southern ridge of the Corbières, the castle of Quéribus, the best preserved high-rise fortress in Cathar Country, projects its elegant silhouette above a superb panorama of the sea with Pyrenees.
